A Wave of 3D Printing Innovation

In 2018, we at Ephrata Precision Parts invested in a new piece of equipment that we knew would expand our horizons: a 3D printer. While the technology had been around for a few years, it didn’t enter into our manufacturing model until that time. Our first printer, a Prusa i3 MK3S FDM, opened new opportunities for us and our customers. Once we had this exciting new technology, we began printing small molds for our Polyurethane department, prototypes for customers, and some trinkets for practice.

Evolving Technology

Because of the success with our first printer, we then purchased a Form Labs Form3 SLA printer in 2019. The Form Labs printer uses a different and more enhanced printing process than the Prusa, with the addition of new materials and capabilities—like a higher resolution and better surface finish—allowing our growing 3D Printing department to stay current.

Our 3D Printing Process

Since we began our launch into 3D printing services, they continue to be on the rise and in demand—it’s easy to see why! This process, also known as additive manufacturing, offers versatility and allows for the creation of complex geometries, intricate details, and customized designs that may be difficult to achieve through traditional manufacturing methods.

We are meticulous about our 3D printing processes and take great pride in serving our customers throughout the Lancaster area, leaving them with a concrete product based on their abstract concept. Design

The first step of any artistic endeavor is the design phase. This stage allows us to define and optimize the functionality of the object we’re 3D printing. Employing our modeling software, we are able to design the part and then import the model into the printer’s software. By carefully considering the purpose and requirements of the object, we design it to fulfill its intended function effectively, including paying special attention to things like structural integrity, ergonomics, and compatibility with other components.

Print

Using a large variety of materials, such as flexible, rigid, medical grade, and high-temp, our printers construct the part over the course of a given length of time. Plus, unlike most of our equipment, we can leave the printers unattended during the printing process, which ultimately decreases the cost.

Finish

After some de-flashing and cleaning, the parts are ready for service. Layer by layer, we get the job done so you can enjoy your new product.

Efficiency with Every Print

Having made great strides since the days of carving prototypes from wood, a new method known as rapid prototyping arose. With this new process, we can develop models and prototypes in an automated way, drastically reducing time spent.

Building on this premise, using 3D printers for prototype work has allowed us to test concepts in days instead of weeks as well as quickly make revisions as new parts are refined. Since 3D printing isn’t as labor intensive as our typical machining and casting processes, the cost savings are extremely beneficial to our customers. Additionally, using the printers to make tooling for our Polyurethane department when possible also provides a significantly cheaper alternative to machined metal molds.
